Retirement Reception for Dean Mary Anne Hanner

Mary Anne Hanner, Dean of the College of Sciences will retire on June 30, 2011 after 30 years of service at Eastern. A reception is planned for Tuesday, May 3rd from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. in the 1895 Room of the MLK Jr. Union. Please come by and wish her well!

College of Sciences ScienceFest Celebration

The College of Sciences invites you to attend its annual ScienceFest celebration which highlights the accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate research, faculty mentoring, and faculty teaching, research, and service on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 12:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. in the University Ballroom of the MLK Jr. Union. Please join in celebrating success of students and faculty in the College of Sciences at ScienceFest 2011!

This year's theme is "Renewable Energy: Powering the 21st Century and Beyond".

The afternoon will begin with a mini sumposium on renewable energy moderated by Gary Bulla, Department of Biological Sciences at 12:35 p.m., featuring Chris Laingen, Department of Geology-Geography; Mr. Dennis Evers, VOW Resources; Eric Rund, Agtivities International; and Dan Johnson, Department of Biological Sciences.

At 1:40 p.m., attendees can attend a browing session of undergraduate and graduate students' research posters.

Mary Anne Hanner, Dean of the College of Sciences, will present the State of the College Address at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Student Advisory Board's report on their energy consumption at EIU initiative at 2:45 p.m.

At 3:15 p.m., awards will be presented for excellence in the College of Sciences, including honors for undergraduate and graduate research, faculty mentoring, and faculty teaching, research and service.

The College of Sciences invites you to attend it’s 15th annual ScienceFest celebration which highlights the accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate research, faculty mentoring, and faculty teaching, research, and service on Friday, March 26, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the University Ballroom of the MLK Jr. Union.

This year's theme is Teaching and Learning: Integration of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The afternoon will begin with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Linda Ghent, chair of the department of economics on "The Art and Science of Sound” at 1:05 p.m., featuring Dr. Emily Tobey, professor and Nellie C. Johnson Chair; Callier Advanced Hearing Research Center, University of Texas at Dallas; Dr. Steve Daniels, professor and chair, Physics; Dr. John Martone, professor, English; and Mr. Mark Rubel, instructor and audio director, Music.

At 2:00 p.m., attendees can attend a browsing session of undergraduate and graduate students' research posters.

Mary Anne Hanner, dean of the EIU College of Sciences, will present the State of the College address at 3:00 p.m., followed by the College of Sciences Student Advisory Board's report on their technology recycling initiative at 3:20 p.m.

Annual Sigma Xi Banquet Approaching

You are cordially invited to the 13th Annual Sigma Xi banquet and lecture to be held on Thursday, March 25, 2010 in the University Ballroom at the MLK, Jr. University Union. Distinguished Sigma Xi Lecturer Dr. Emily Tobey will give a free public lecture “Frankenstein: How physics, literature and theatre led to a scientific success” at 7 PM Thursday after the 5 PM banquet.

Dr. Tobey is a Nelle C. Johnston Chair in Communication Disorders in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Tobey received her undergraduate and master’s degree in speech-language pathology from New Mexico State University and Louisiana State University Medical Center. Her doctorate in speech science was obtained at the City University of New York in 1981. She has been employed as teacher of the deaf in the Orleans Parish School System in New Orleans, in addition, to her previous employment at the Louisiana State University Medical Center as an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor and professor in the Departments of Communication Disorders, Removable Prosthodontics, and Otorhinolaryngology. She has served as a researcher at Haskins Laboratories and Kresge Hearing Research Laboratory of the South. Her current interests lie in the role of auditory feedback on the development and maintenance of speech and language.

To attend the banquet, which will be a Cajun food delight including catfish, blackened chicken, and sausage jambalaya, please send $16.00 check payable to Sigma Xi to Dr. Brenda Wilson, Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences to be received by Thursday, March 22, 2010. Banquet tickets at the door will be $20.00.

New Chair Appointed to Chemistry Department

On January 1, 2010, Dr. Dan Sheeran has begun his appointment as chair of the Chemistry Department after completing a research sabbatical during the Fall semester. While completing his sabbitical, Dr. Mark McGuire served as acting chair of the department. We welcome Dr. Sheeran to the administrative team of the College of Sciences.

Administrative Changes in the College of Sciences

On June 1, 2009, Dr. Steve Daniels was appointed as the new chair of the Department of Physics. Dr. Leonard Storm has returned to his faculty position and will be retiring from EIU this December.

As of July 1, 2009, Dr. Gary Bulla will be serving as the interim chair and Dr. Steve Mullin as the interim associate chair of Biological Sciences. Dr. Andrew Methven is returning to his faculty position and will continue to serve as the coordinator for the MS in Natural Sciences program.

Dr. Craig Eckert has been appointed as the new chair of the Sociology/Anthropology Department. He will replace Dr. Gary Foster who will be retiring from EIU this August.

Dr. Mark McGuire will serve as the interim chair of the Chemistry Department during the Fall semester and Dr. Dan Sheeran will begin his appointment as chair of Chemistry on January 1, 2010 after completing a research sabbatical during the Fall semester. Dr. Doug Klarup is returning to his faculty position in the Chemistry Department.

Dr. Dianne Nelson Receives 2008 Women of Achievement Award

On Tuesday, March 31, 2009, Dr. Dianne Nelson, Director of the new EIU Nursing Program received the 2009 Women of Achievement Award. Dr. Nelson was nominated by her co-workers for her commitment to the program and her collaborative approach to leadership. Dr. Nelson emphasized the connections between Women's Studies and nursing, tracing the history of nursing from its inception as "women's work" through efforts to increase respect for nurses, which have resulted in the current professionalization of nursing.
